During my time organizing among the poor in Philadelphia in the 1990s, we saw our work to end poverty as building a “new Underground Railroad.” In recent years, the path of this freedom railroad has moved through the work of the Kairos Center and the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. It has woven together a vast network of the poor organizing across the nation.
Today, this freedom railroad has stops in Amazon warehouses and fast food restaurants; immigrant communities protecting themselves from ICE raids; cities where people are winning moratoriums on electricity and utility shut-offs; housing developments and hospitals where thousands are insisting that housing and healthcare are human rights.
And it has burst onto the surface in the streets, as people organize in bold new ways to say we won’t be silent anymore in the face of systemic racism.
June 20 is the next stop on this freedom railroad. We will rise together on Saturday for the Mass Poor People’s Assembly and Moral March on Washington in an historic online gathering of the poor and all people of conscience. What we need is a movement, and that’s what the Poor People’s Campaign is building: the power of poor people across all the lines that divide us in this nation.
