SALT LAKE CITY — The Westar Institute is proud to announce its upcoming event, “Confronting Christian Nationalism,” taking place from Thursday, May 23, 2024, to Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the prestigious Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah.
This crucial gathering will feature world-renowned scholars and activists, including the eminent Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan, who celebrates his ninetieth birthday in February. Joining him is the esteemed Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, Director of the Kairos Center and Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign Together, they will present lectures and discussions aimed at addressing the pressing issue of Christian nationalism and its impact on society.
Christian nationalism, a movement that conflates Christianity with national identity and political power, has gained prominence in recent years, raising concerns about its implications for democracy, religious freedom, and social justice. The “Confronting Christian Nationalism” event seeks to examine this phenomenon from diverse perspectives, offering insights based on sound religious scholarship and strategies for countering its influence.
“We are living in a critical moment where the intersection of religion and politics has profound implications for our society,” says John Dominic Crossan. “It’s imperative that we engage in meaningful dialogue and action to confront the dangers posed by Christian nationalism.”
Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis adds, “As people of faith, we have a moral obligation to challenge ideologies that promote division, exclusion, and injustice. This event provides a unique opportunity to come together, learn from one another, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable future.”
Early bird registration for the “Confronting Christian Nationalism” event is now open until March 15, 2024. Attendees are encouraged to secure their spots early to take advantage of discounted rates.
