We’re living in a time of real dangers and also new opportunities. The attacks on poor people are getting increasingly intense and violent, and more people are finding themselves facing difficult times. But we’re also seeing more people taking action to defend themselves and their families and communities. The task that Rev. Dr. King put before us 50 years ago, when he proposed the Poor People’s Campaign, was to find a way for the poor to “take action together” and become a “new and unsettling force” that could take the nation, and the world, in a radically different direction.
We aim to revive Rev. Dr. King’s call for a Poor People’s Campaign (learn more here): to take action on the life-and-death issues that we’re facing in a way that builds across the divisions among those who are hurting the most. On Monday, December 5th, we organized a discussion among some of the leaders who’ve already answered that call. They talked about the problems they’re seeing in their own communities, the kinds of fights that they’re helping to organize around those issues, and why they see a need for a New Poor People’s Campaign.
We were be joined by:
- Aaron Scott, from Chaplains on the Harbor in Grays Harbor, WA
- Rev. Erica Williams, from Repairers of the Breach
- Idalin Bobé, from the Popular Education Project
