Ella Baker was a revolutionary leader, teacher, and organizer in the Black Freedom Movement, dedicating her life to the struggle for civil and human rights. A fierce critic of the charismatic leader model, she championed the power of ordinary people to shape their own futures and prioritized developing young leaders within the movement. Over her lifetime, Baker played a key role in more than thirty major political campaigns and organizations, confronting the interconnected evils of racism, poverty, imperialism, and sexism. She understood that the fight for freedom and justice requires long-term commitment and met this challenge with unwavering dignity, courage, and a steadfast belief in the power of collective action to create lasting change.

In August 2024, participants from across the nation gathered at the Bethany Arts Community for a transformative cultural organizing retreat hosted by the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice and the NYS Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. This powerful retreat brought together song leaders, musicians, organizers, and media makers from the Kairos Center, NYS Poor People’s Campaign, Highlander Research & Education Center, Dream Defenders, the SSING Network, Black Youth Project 100 and the NYS Media Team, all united in the shared vision of social justice and collective action.

In this video, we came together to sing “Ella’s Song”, a powerful anthem inspired by the legacy of Ella Baker, a visionary leader and organizer in the Black Freedom Movement written and composed by the late Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon. Ella Baker’s tireless dedication to civil and human rights, her commitment to grassroots organizing, and her belief in the power of ordinary people to lead and create change are all captured in this moving rendition. The song echoes her fierce critique of the “charismatic leader” model and her unwavering belief in the collective power of the people.

Today we remember Ella Baker on the day of her birth and passing, December 13th. As we reflect on Baker’s life and her incredible contributions to the struggle for freedom, justice, and equality, this recording serves as a reminder of the enduring relevance of her work. Her example inspires us to continue building movements that uplift the voices of impacted people and empower communities to shape their own futures.

Join us in celebrating Ella Baker’s legacy, and let this song remind us of the ongoing work of organizing for a just and moral society. #WeSingFreedom
