Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II made an appearance on MSNBC to speak about the Repairers of the Breach action in Selma, and was asked about a congressman who quoted “the poor will always be with you” (Matt. 26:11) to justify denying healthcare to millions of Americans. Rev. Barber referred to the full scripture and its Hebrew Bible context and went on to talk about how Jesus gave free healthcare wherever he went. Watch the clip here:
Kansas Representative Roger Marshall really stepped in it by invoking this Bible verse to justify harming the poor. Our very own Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, an expert on this Biblical verse, will be releasing her book, Always With Us?: What Jesus Really Said About the Poor, with a foreword by Rev. Barber, this April.
