Freedom Church of the Poor
Our Mission
The Freedom Church of the Poor is a spiritual and political home for movement leaders. We believe in the fundamental dignity and value of all life and in a world of abundance where all can thrive. We gather as a community of faith to support and care for each other. We commit to realizing the abundant world God promises by identifying, developing, and uniting leaders who will build a movement to end poverty led by the poor. In this community and through our commitment to this struggle we also seek to re-discover and share a vision and practice of religion that is rooted in truth, justice, and love.
This Season: Disability Pride Month (July 1st – July 29th)

Where Struggle Meets Joy
This Disability Pride Month, Freedom Church of the Poor invites our community into a season of learning, reflection, worship, and action centered on the lives, leadership, and witness of disabled people.
Disabled people have long resisted systems that exclude, isolate, institutionalize, and devalue their lives. Through organizing, advocacy, and collective action, generations have fought for civil rights, accessibility, healthcare, and the recognition of their inherent dignity. Their struggle has reshaped our communities and expanded our understanding of justice.
Yet Disability Pride is about more than remembering the past. It is also about celebrating the beauty, creativity, wisdom, relationships, and joy that flourish within disability culture. Joy is not the absence of struggle, it is an act of resistance and a testimony to the sacred worth of every person.
As the Freedom Church of the Poor, we believe that every person is created with inherent dignity and beloved by God. We seek to build communities rooted in truth, justice, love, and abundance, where every body and every mind can fully belong and thrive.
Throughout this month, we will explore stories of struggle and resilience, celebrate disability culture and leadership, lament the injustices that continue to harm disabled communities, and recommit ourselves to the work of collective liberation.
We believe that disability justice is not a concern for only some people. It is part of God’s vision for the beloved community, where no one is left behind and all people can flourish.
Join us as we journey together to discover where struggle meets joy.

Take Action!
Free Families – Each week we will feature leaders taking action as part of the Free Families Campaign. We will hear how communities across the country meet this challenging moment together in power, dignity and love, by taking action and supporting each other. This could include: gathering inside or outside detention centers to support family and neighbors, gathering for a meal in person, gathering online, singing, prayer, and much more. The goal with Free Families is to have as many people as possible feel like they can show up for families who are experiencing detention, separation and exploitation.
