Easter Sunday with Freedom Church of the Poor

March 31 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

In the Christian tradition Easter is a day of joy and celebration of new, resurrected life. As we confront the tremendous suffering of our times – ongoing death and violence in our communities, genocide, war, ecolgoical devastation, and general abandonment amidst abundance across the world – we recognize how difficult it may be to see and feel this joy, or to claim victory of life over death.
But the story of Jesus’ resurrection is also about the continued life of a movement, of the “way” that Jesus’ revealed (and the prophets before him). This way confronted Empire. Jesus’ disciples had to flee when the State came to crucify their leader, but they went on to organize and grow a movement. We see this spirit and life enduring in the resistance to empire and death dealing systems today; in the organizing and brave leadership of people who continue to live out the possibility of a different way – a way of truth, justice, and love.
This Easter Sunday the Freedom Church of the Poor along with the Adalah Justice Project, New Disabled South, Black Christians 4 Palestine, Friends of Sabeel, North America (FOSNA), along with many other partners, gather as a movement community to care for each other, to lament the death and violence around us, and to lift up the promise of life renewed in and through the struggle for justice, peace, and liberation.
